Résumé : Contrairement aux emprunts lexicaux, les emprunts syntaxiques du bambara au français n’ont jamais été étudiés. Ce premier repérage, à partir de l’étude de différents textes oraux et écrits, permet de mettre en évidence une dizaine de cas de contamination dont il apparaît que la fréquence est d’autant plus importante qu’il s’agit de traductions du français ou de textes dont le contenu est de type « moderne ». En revanche, dans les textes traditionnels, les emprunts syntaxiques au français sont quasiment absents.

Ce n’est pas une approche conforme à l’état de l’art, mais elle s’est avéré faisable et permet d’avancer en attendant, et de faire face à l’énorme quantité de travail requis.

Аннотация: Данная статья посвящена анализу двух сказки бамана. Так как основная функция сказки – обучение, в ней всегда сокрыты основные нормы культуры, представлены они могут быть как положительными, так и отрицательными моделями поведения. Две сказки, выбранные нами для анализа, представляют отрицательные модели поведения и рассказывают, в частности, о взаимодействии своего и чужого мира. Таким образом, они рассказывают в основном о нарушениях норм как социальных, так и норм взаимодействия с чужим миром. Именно эти нормы мы и постарались определить. Для анализа были взяты сказки «Гиена съела дочь вождя» и «Сказка про охотника и диких зверей».

SOGOLON

Abstract: Sogolon is the name of the mother of Sundiata Keita, the hero of the well-known Mandinka Epic. It is also a surname given by Valentin Vydrin to his daughter Alexandra, co-author of this paper. Finally, it is a word that can be found in a couple of dictionaries of West African languages. Our purpose is to follow some of the tracks that this word opens, which will lead us to unexpected assumptions.

Аннотация: В статье на примере языков манде рассматриваются возможности использования регулярной полисемии и регулярной омонимии для решения задач компаративистики и семантической типологии. Исследуются три случая. Регулярная полисемия, отмеченная только в языках манде, может быть использована для семантической реконструкции праманде. Регулярная омонимия, отмеченная только в языках манде, позволяет выделить фонетически близкие или омонимичные корни праманде. Регулярная омонимия, отмеченная не только в языках манде, но и в других ветвях нигер-конго, позволяет установить регулярные фонетические соответствия между языками различных ветвей нигер-конго без промежуточных реконструкций.

THE DETRANSITIVIZING SUFFIX -I AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF PRE-PROTO-MANDE CONSTITUENT ORDER

Abstract: The uniformity and total rigidity of the SOVX constituent order across Mande languages constitutes a typological oddity, which led several scholars to discuss the possibility of analyzing it as historically derived from a typologically more common constituent order. In this article, I show that the hypothesis of a historical link between a detransitivizing suffix -i found in some West Mande languages and a reflexive pronoun reconstructable as í has implications for the reconstruction of Pre-Proto-Mande constituent order.

INCORPORATION AND “FORMAL INCORPORATION” IN ANALYTIC LANGUAGES: MANDE LANGUAGES AND TYPOLOGY OF INCORPORATION

Abstract: Although the Mande languages are usually characterized as analytic, they demonstrate a broader spectrum of typological features. For instance, Gban (South Mande) was analyzed as having evident inflective elements. This paper concerns the phenomenon of incorporation observed in some Mande languages (Mandinka, Tigemaxo, Soninke). It also attempts at attracting attention to the interpretation of some facts which do not suit the definition of incorporation but demonstrate some phenomena, to a certain extent, similar to incorporation (Gban, South Mande). The author (very tentatively) uses the term “formal incorporation” for them and offers a new variant of the typology of incorporation, including it into the broader set of different phenomena. It is worth noting that the paper concentrates on the particular sort of incorporation, i.e., object + verb incorporation.

LOROPHORIC STRATEGY IN SAN-MAKA

Abstract: The article deals with strategies of coding the participants of communication in reporting discourse in San-Maka (Eastern Mande < Mande < Niger-Congo). San-Maka demonstrates an interesting case wherein 3rd person Sg and Pl pronouns, combined with an emphatic marker sɛ́, are used in a logophoric function. However, this construction is not fully grammaticalized. The combination of the pronouns with the emphatic marker acts in a logophoric function in specific reported speech contexts in the presence of the quotative particle mà ~ mə̀ ~ m’ which occupies the leftmost position of the clause. Different possible interpretations of this strategy are shown, followed by a conclusion about the ongoing formation of the logophoric strategy in San-Maka and the grammaticalization of pronouns with the marker sɛ́ into a specialized logophoric pronoun series.

GOOD NOUNS, NAUGHTY VERBS: HOW FRENCH BORROWINGS RECEIVE GRAMMATICAL TONES IN GUINEAN KPELLE

Abstract: The paper discusses how modern French loan nouns and verbs are morphophonologically adapted into Guinean Kpelle (Southwestern Mande), with a special focus on tone. To date, studies of prosodic loanword adaption from stress to tone languages have mainly focused on lexical tone assignment, largely neglecting other phenomena. This study contributes to the discussion by describing primary tone assignment of French loanwords in Guinean Kpelle, and, crucially, by exploring how loan words behave with respect to other complex morphophonological phenomena, mainly, prefixal and replacive grammatical tones, consonant alternations, and surface tone rules. My data suggest that loan nouns perfectly follow native Guinean Kpelle rules, whereas loan verbs have a distinct replacive {HL} morphological marker corresponding to {L} in native verbs. Distinct prosodic marking of loan verbs in Guinean Kpelle broadens our understanding of loanword typology, as well as of grammatical tone.

ANTIPASSIVE CONSTRUCTIONS IN TIGEMAXO (BOZO)

Abstract: The present paper investigates the grammar of the 2nd argument, the patient-like object, in Tigemaxo, focusing on first-hand data to describe three different antipassive constructions common in this language. The main questions treated are: What are the ways the 2nd argument is expressed, focusing on the structural possibilities to demote or suppress it? Then, looking at alternative morphosyntactic alternations, what motivates the choice of one of these structures over the other? It will be shown that 2nd argument demotion or suppression is common in Tigemaxo, and that one of the AP constructions is motivated by a stylistic effect.

BRIDGING CAUGHT IN A CROSSFIRE: THE MARKER OF SITUATED DEFINITENESS IN MANO AND LANGUAGE CONTACT

Abstract: In this article, I review the basic semantic functions of the determiner à in the South Mande language Mano, which is used to mark situated definiteness: most prominently, bridging and anaphora. The marker derives from the 3sg pronoun. Similar markers are also used in a number of other South Mande languages, including Kla-Dan, Dan-Gweetaa, Guro, Tura and Gban. In Mano, as well as in the former four languages the head noun takes an optional low-tone head marking, which is more frequent in Mano than in other languages. I argue that the increased frequency of use of the marking is influenced by contact with the Southwest Mande language Kpelle, which has a grammaticalized preposed definiteness marker, also deriving from a 3sg prefix, and triggering low tone on the noun it attaches to.

“INFINITIVE” CLASS 15 IN DABIDA

Abstract: The paper deals with the morphosyntactic properties of infinitives in the Dabida language. As in the majority of Bantu languages, Dabida infinitives are allocated to noun class 15 by virtue of their morphological structure, in particular, the nominal prefix ku-. Nevertheless, from the morphosyntactic point of view infinitives demonstrate a number of nominal and verbal properties that reveal their dual nature. Although these properties are not usually attested in the same ku- form thus contrasting the two uses, there are, however, syntactic positions where both verbal and nominal features are exhibited at once.

THE BEST WAY TO DRINK IN BEJA AND BEYOND: WATER AND MILK

Abstract: In the Beja society of the eastern arid zone of Sudan, water and milk are essential beverages for survival, and are also salient elements of the culture as reflected by a rich lexicon. This paper shows how social rules, time intervals, and incompleteness are encoded in monolexemic drinking and milking items, as well as lexical differences based on the animacy hierarchy between humans and animals in the domain of thirst. The structure of the Beja lexicon is compared with that of other African languages, and the Beja social rules related to drinking and milking are illustrated with two anecdotes extracted from oral literature texts.

ВЕРСИЯ ВЕТХОГО ЗАВЕТА НА ЯЗЫКЕ ЗУЛУ В ТИПОЛОГИЧЕСКОЙ ПЕРСПЕКТИВЕ

Аннотация: Настоящая статья продолжает типологические исследования стратегий перевода Библии на различные языки. Эти исследования посвящены пассажам и лексемам в каноническом тексте Biblia Hebraica, отражающим древние культурные и религиозные представления, которые не соответствуют более поздним монотеистическим принципам иудаизма и христианства. В каноническом древнееврейском тексте не допускаются никакие изменения. Таким образом, оказываются возможными две стратегии перевода: (1) сохранять эти пассажи в тексте перевода (филологическая стратегия), (2) редактировать эти пассажи в соответствии с монотеистическими принципами (идеологическая стратегия). В центре внимания настоящей работы находится проблема передачи в переводе имени древней семитской богини ’ashera, спутницы верховных богов (’El /’Il/, Ba‘al, YHWH) в некоторых традициях и пантеонах). В различных переводах Библии представлены две традиции передачи имени ’ashera: (1) сохранять имя богини (филологическая стратегия), (2) убирать это имя или заменять его на обозначения ее фетишей и культовых объектов (идеологическая стратегия). В настоящей статье рассматривается передача имени ’ashera в версии Ветхого Завета на языке зулу.

ABSOLUTE-RELATIVE TENSE IN OLD KANEMBU: FOREGROUNDING BY POSTERIOR TAXIS

Abstract: Old Kanembu is an extinct Saharan language that survives in annotations to the Qur’anic manuscripts of the 17th to 18th century. The past and future categories of Old Kanembu are absolute-relative tenses with posterior taxis as their orientational mechanism. The posterior location of events in temporal domains is tied up with the communicative goal of guiding the recipient through the complex Qur’anic discourse so that the foreground information and prominent elements are clearly set off against the background events. Similar properties are reported for the past and future tenses in Kanuri and therefore the Old Kanembu data corroborates a previously postulated hypothesis that the past and future in Kanuri are inherently focus categories (Wolff & Löhr 2006). Given that complexity of the Kanuri TAM system – significantly more elaborated than in the other Saharan languages – was triggered by the contact with Chadic languages and that Old Kanembu preserves archaic features going back to the 16th century and beyond, the semantic properties of the Old Kanembu past and future provide additional evidence of early Chadic influence on Kanuri.

Аннотация: Статья представляет собой комментированную публикацию нескольких сессий полевой работы с информантами, проведенных ведущим африканистом Антониной Ивановной Коваль в 1993 году. Эта работа была связана с подготовкой сказок-полилингвов на разных диалектах и говорах пулар-фульфульде. В ходе работы А.И. Коваль получила два варианта сказки на говоре Dalaba диалекта фута-джаллон и большое количество сопутствующей лингвистической, социолингвистической и другой информации. Характер этой работы, отраженной в публикуемом документе, представляет большой методологический интерес.

Abstract: This paper is a description of the noun class system of the Minyanka dialect (Senufo, Gur) spoken in the Penesso village (Segou region, southeastern Mali). It describes the noun class markers and the agreement classes of this dialect. A comparison with other Minyanka dialects already described displays that the dialect spoken in Penesso has undergone a reduction of its agreement classes.

ON THE ASPECTUAL SYSTEM OF WUSHI (BABESSI), A RING GRASSFIELDS BANTU LANGUAGE OF CAMEROON

Abstract: One of the characteristics of Bantu languages, including Grassfields Bantu languages, is their multiple time distinctions. Within the Ring Grassfields group, multiple tenses are also well attested. For example, Aghem has three past and two future tenses (Anderson 1979), Babanki has four past tenses and three future tenses (Akumbu & Fogwe 2012), as well as Lamnso’ (Yuka 2012). Oku has three past tenses and two future tenses (Nforbi 1993) and Babungo has four past and two future tenses (Schaub 1985). These tenses represent different degrees of remoteness in time such as hesternal, immediate, distant, etc. However, in spite of the indisputable lexical unity of Ring Grassfields Bantu languages (Stallcup 1980; Piron 1997), Wushi strikingly stands apart: it does not mark tense morphologically. As a matter of fact, the aspectual system of Wushi is based on five aspects: perfective, imperfective, retrospective or anterior, potential, and the distal or dissociative marker kə̀ that is analyzed in the light of Botne & Kershner (2008). This paper sets out to analyze these verb forms.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEMAS IN YORUBA COMPOUNDING: FOCUS ON PERSONAL NAMES

Abstract: Compounding is a common word-formation process in Yoruba which is instantiated by different compound structures and types. However, in Yoruba personal names, compounds may exhibit significant formal and semantic properties that reflect certain constructional schemas in grammar. Hence, using the framework of construction morphology, this paper examines various schemas in Yoruba compound personal names and the internal features of these schemas. Based on data collected from personal interviews and native speaker intuition, I show that Yoruba personal names are constructions involving complex structural schemas which constitute a form-meaning pair where there are internal features that are not only semantic but syntactic and phonological. Furthermore, the paper reveals that several compound patterns may occur in Yoruba names including N-N, N-V, V-N, N-A and N-Av and that phonological processes in these schemas may be unique to the name constructions.

ÌLÀJE NAMES: AN APPRAISAL OF YORÙBÁ CULTURE

Abstract: Naming is an intrinsic aspect of the Yorùbá culture. Beyond identification tags, it also serves as an anchorage to project culture, didactics and the destiny of a name-bearer, particularly in Ìlàje communities of Ondo State, Nigeria. Notwithstanding, critics of Yorùbá names have overlooked the deep historicity and culture preservation entrenched into Ìlàje names. This study, therefore, examines Ìlàje names based on their linguistic and religious significance to consolidate the need for culture retention among the Yorùbá. The study employs traditional criticism as a theoretical construct to analyze the primary data, which were indigenous names collected through oral interviews from indigenes of Ìlàje communities. The secondary data comprised books, journals, internet articles on names. Findings reveal that despite modern civilization and western religion, Ìlàje communities maintain indigenous names which bother on profound Yorùbá culture manifested in the names of their children and their ornate consequence within the broader spectrum of the Yorùbá culture. Ìlàje names were categorized based on association with prominent Yorùbá concepts like destiny, death, religion, metaphysics, morality, children, kinship, social relations and wealth. The study, though a contribution to existing knowledge on Yorùbá names, is a unique interdisciplinary blend of culture and linguistics of Ìlàje communities.

A SKETCH OF NGEN PHONOLOGY

Abstract: The paper provides a preliminary description of the phonology of Ngen, a South Mande language spoken in Ivory Coast. Ngen has a system of oral and nasal vowels. The consonant inventory is characterised by a complementary distribution between [b] and [m], [l] and [n], [y] and [ɲ]. There are 3 level tones. Tone melodies on disyllabic feet exhibit all possible combinations except LH. The majority of non-derived words have CV, CVCV, and CVŋ structures.

Аннотация: GRAMMATICAL USES OF THE VERB -GUMA ‘STAY’ IN KIRUNDI (JD62): A LINGUISTICS STUDY BASED ON A CORPUS

Abstract: In Bantu languages, verbs that have a general meaning can become grammaticalized. The purpose of this study is to show that in Kirundi (JD62), the variant spoken in Burundi, the stative verb -guma ‘to stay’ can appear in given morphosyntactic structures to contribute to the production of various grammatical semantics. This article examines the different grammatical uses of -guma based on one corpus of Kirundi texts from BantUGent. According to corpus data three grammatical uses of the verb could be identified: continuity, regularity and gradual process. First of all, the verb -guma (used as an auxiliary) marks continuity depending on its conjugation and that of the main verb. Secondly, it marks a regularity of the action described by the main verb. Finally, it is used to mark a gradual process. These grammatical functions as well as the different forms of conjugation of -guma and the main verb do not have the same frequency in the written corpus and in the oral language. The statistical distribution shows that the use of -guma as a continuity marker is more frequent both in the written corpus and in oral language compared to regularity and gradual process.

A SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF VERBAL GREETINGS, ADDRESS FORMS AND PARALINGUISTIC BEHAVIOURS IN KISUBI

Abstract: This paper analyses the greeting system of Kisubi. It specifically seeks: to identify temporal greeting patterns in Kisubi; to determine whether age and gender do dictate the kind of verbal greetings, address forms and paralinguistic behaviours that are used in particular greeting events; to examine different kinship-specific verbal greetings, address forms and paralinguistic behaviours that are used in particular greeting events; and lastly, to assess the role of context in the Kisubi greeting system. Observation and face-to-face interview methods were used to gather data from 36 participants who were obtained using snowball sampling technique, and afterwards they were stratified into different strata depending on age, gender and educational status of a person. This stratification led to the attainment of authentic data. The obtained data were subjected to content analysis from which different themes emerged. It was established that there are four temporal chunks in Kisubi, each of which is associated with its own greeting term. Age, gender, context and kinship relations also determine the type of greeting terms and the honorifics or deferential terms to use. However, the use of honorifics and/or deferential terms is declining gradually.

LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF THE FORMS OF ADDRESS IN NYAKYUSA

Abstract: The main contribution of this article revolves around the choice of address forms as a mechanism to express politeness in an institutionalised setting in African context. To achieve this goal, I worked with spoken texts which enabled to unravel three issues. First, maternal forms of address in Nyakyusa reveal a dichotomy of male-female distinction, which adopts the male-oriented terms when the general population is referred to. Terms of masculine status are preferred in addressing the general public. In this case both male and female members of the community are addressed by male-oriented kin terms. Second, since utility of address forms primarily involves selection of kinship terms, their choice is a strategy employed to express politeness in face-to-face conversations. The extensions and incorporation of kinship terms in the forms of address is a testimony that the Nyakyusa people manoeuvres terms to express politeness. Lastly, Nyakyusa people have adjusted their kin system. This is obvious with such terms as usangasi (< Swahili: shangazi ‘father’s sister’), ugwifi (< Swahili: wifi ‘brother’s wife’) and abalongosi (< Swahili: viongozi ‘leaders’). In this regard, findings show that the lexicon for the traditional leadership is slightly disrupted by the introduction of the modern system of government.

HAUSA PHRASEOLOGISMS AS A STRUCTURAL PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL VALUE

Abstract: The paper discusses phraseological units in Hausa as combinations of lexical units which have grammatical and cultural motivations. Its purpose is to identify language-specific types of structural phraseologisms and their culture-specific meanings. At the structural level, the most productive patterns of verbal phrases and nominal compounds are being presented. Special attention is devoted to various types of verb-based nominal phrases which refer to perceiving the surrounding world through instances of people’s behavior. The structural phraseologisms are also seen as a means of abstract conceptualization and a source of grammaticalization processes. The cultural background of the Hausa phraseologisms is referred to culture key-words and the traces of cultural experience which determine the meaning of the whole phrase. This approach includes a comparative perspective in studies on phrasal expressions in the Hausa language. The examples are taken from lexicographic sources and from descriptive works; they are also extracted from literary texts, the text of Magana Jari Ce [Speech is an Asset] by Abubakar Imam in particular.

Аннотация: THE EVOLUTION OF THE NOUN CLASS SYSTEM OF NGWI (WEST-COASTAL BANTU, B861, DRC)

Abstract: In this paper we offer a first systematic account of the noun class system of Ngwi, a West-Coastal Bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. First, we describe the synchronic system of noun class prefixes and the agreement patterns they trigger on constituents of the noun phrase and the verb. Second, we provide a diachronic analysis of the innovations the synchronic Ngwi noun class system underwent with respect to the noun class system reconstructed for the most recent common ancestor of all Narrow Bantu languages. Finally, we compare the morphological innovations found in the Ngwi noun class system with those identified in the noun class systems of other West-Coastal Bantu varieties and assess whether some of these could be diagnostic for internal classification within this western Bantu branch.

FEMALE CHARACTERS IN KENYAN WOMEN’S SHORT STORY: FROM SUBMISSION TO SELF-RELIANCE

Abstract: The article analyses the depiction of new types of female characters in the stories by Kenyan female writers published from 2003 to 2012 in literary almanacs Kwani? and Storymoja. The author traces the evolution of female characters from the “victim” type, which appeared in Kenyan women’s literature already in the 1960s, to its modern alternatives – women advocating their rights in all spheres of private and public life.

WORD OR OTHERWISE? THE STATUS OF THE COPULA NO IN GUINEAN PULAR

Abstract: The paper analyzes the morphosyntactic status of a copula no as part of complex verbal predicates of Guinean Pular. A locative copula no, combined with various forms of lexical verb, adds up to three verbal constructions. Morphological and semantic non-compositionality of no in such constructions questions its morphosyntactic status as a free word and suggests that it might be an affix or a clitic. Pular data has been subjected to a series of tests using a set of phonological, morphological, and semantic criteria. The results of the phonological tests show that no in complex verbal predicates cannot be a free word, whereas the morphological tests deny it the status of an affix. It is, therefore, concluded that this copula is a clitic, which is confirmed by the language data complying with general morphological and phonological criteria.

SEXUAL TABOOS AND EUPHEMISMS IN IGBO: AN ANTHROPOLINGUISTIC APPRAISAL

Abstract: Due to face-threatening effect of taboo words, euphemisms are used to replace them for the sake of politeness. Several studies have been carried out on sexual taboos across cultures, including Igbo, but most have centrally focused on euphemisms for sex organs, with inadequate attention paid to the sex act itself. As a result, this study examines euphemisms about sex or copulation in Igbo with a view to delineating the categories and strategies employed by Igbo to express them. Through Participant and Non-participant Observation, data (11 conversations) were collected from 22 participants comprising 16 men and 6 women across 6 different settings in Lagos State, Nigeria. The result showed that participants used two major strategies (idiomatic expressions and symbols) and coinage to euphemise the act of sex. Two broad categories of sex found were explicit euphemisms representing the common type, and opaque euphemisms representing the uncommon type. However, both categories are existing words in the language that are imbued with new meanings to achieve the censoring objective. The alternative forms adequately serve the intended purpose because they mask and obscure the tabooed subject and hence save the face of interlocutors.

Аннотация: AFRICAN LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPES: FOCUS ON ENGLISH

Abstract: English is the official or co-official language in 21 African nations. Out of these the linguistic landscape analysis here focuses on two countries, that is Namibia and Tanzania. In the latter case, the national language Swahili enjoys de facto the same status as English which, however, for the number of competent speakers is a minority language in this East African country, Namibia and elsewhere in Africa. The paper deals mainly with the English use in various domains, as evidenced in billboard texts, shop signs, on murals, buildings and more. It describes the top-down (originating from central institutions) or bottom-up (grassroots) approach to shaping the linguistic landscape in public. From this perspective the paper demonstrates the high prestige of English.

THE KAKABE DIALECTAL CONTINUUM: A LEXICOSTATISTICAL STUDY

Abstract: Kakabe, an understudied language in Guinea (Mokole < Western Mande < Mande < Niger-Congo), is spoken by several ethnic groups, mainly of inferior social status, most of which are bilingual in Pular. There are four dialects of Kakabe: Northern (the Kankalabe area), Central (villages to the north-west, east and south-east of Timbo), Kuru-Maninka and Wure-Kaba Maninka. The Northern and Central dialects are close to each other linguistically, their speakers refer to themselves as “Kakabe”, and these dialects can be regarded as comprising “nuclear Kakabe”; meanwhile, the speakers of Kuru-Maninka and Wure-Kaba Maninka reject being identified as “Kakabe”, and their varieties have far fewer loans from Pular. A lexicostatistical study based on the Swadesh 100-item wordlist has been carried out. It confirmed the preliminary hypothesis of a particular affinity between the “core dialects” and showed that the other two dialects are further removed from them, but not as distant as the Mogofin (Mixifore) language spoken to the south of Boke (extreme NW part of the Republic of Guinea). Therefore, from a linguistic viewpoint, the Wure-Kaba Maninka and Kuru-Maninka varieties can be regarded as Kakabe dialects despite the fact that their speakers do not consider themselves Kakabe.

THE NOMINAL SYSTEM OF KIRUNDI (BANTU, JD62) AND KISWAHILI (BANTU, G42): A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS

Abstract: The objective of this article is to compare the noun systems of Kirundi and Standard Kiswahili in order to help bilingual users of Kirundi and Kiswahili to understand the internal organization and functioning of the noun in the two languages. A comparative approach based on contrastive analysis led to two main results. On the one hand, at the level of similarities, nominal prefixes are the means of expression of nominal classes, nominal genders, the mechanism of the augmentative/diminutive and serve to control grammatical agreement. On the other hand, at the level of the remarkable differences, these have been highlighted: the system of nominal genders in Kiswahili is simplified compared to that of Kirundi because Kirundi has more retentions of Proto-Bantu than does Kiswahili, the morphosyntactic agreement is of mechanical type in Kirundi while it combines semantically motivated and mechanical models in Kiswahili. The expression of the augmentative/diminutive is done differently in Kirundi and Kiswahili in second-degree if we take into account the singular/plural pairing pattern in the two languages.

IDEOPHONES IN THE KRU LANGUAGE FAMILY

Abstract: In many grammatical descriptions, ideophones are often ignored. In this paper, I attempt to do a preliminary study of ideophones in the Kru language family (Niger-Congo). Though data is limited, I give an overview of various phonological, morphophonological, syntactic and semantic features of this word class, as well as make some initial observations of ideophone use in discourse. Primarily a descriptive study, I try to interact with some major claims in the literature (Blench 2010a; 2010b; Bodomo 2006; Childs 1996; 2001; 2003; 2019; Dingemanse 2012; 2019; Welmers 1973), especially in regard to African languages.

Аннотация: NOUN FORMATION PROCESSES IN NDA’NDA’

Abstract: This paper examines noun formation processes in Nda’nda’, a little-documented language spoken in Western Cameroon. My concern is to account for the various strategies used by the language to expand its vocabulary in the face of new realities. How are new words created? What are the linguistic transformations loanwords undergo when they enter the language? To answer these questions, data are collected with a wordlist, transcribed in IPA and analyzed in a structural approach. Four lexical enrichment processes are identified here, namely derivation, conversion, borrowing and compounding. Derivation mainly explores how suffixes function in Nda’nda’ in the creation of new words. Conversion from verbs to nouns, though not very productive, is also examined. An analysis of loanwords highlights the phonological, morphological and semantic behavior of the latter in the language. Compounding studies the rules that govern the association of lexical items that exist independently in the Nda’nda’ lexicon.

WHEN GUR CLASS MARKERS ARE ABSENT: SUFFIX OMISSION IN NATIORO

Abstract: The paper deals with the morphology of class marking in Natioro, an underdescribed Gur language spoken in several villages of Burkina Faso. In Natioro, class markers (which are a typical feature of Gur languages) are frequently omitted in many contexts, such as genitive constructions, as well as NPs modified by adjectives, numerals, and quantifiers. In the paper, I will focus on the morphological (rather than semantic) properties of these constructions. I will show that noun stems occurring in constructions with omitted class markers can be regarded as instances of incorporation. Particular attention will be given to adjectival incorporation. In Natioro, there are two types of adjectival constructions, which can be distinguished by the nature of the stems involved. I will argue that some of the incorporated constructions are derived by merging a noun with a non-inflected adjective, whereas others can be regarded as full-fledged adjectives that incorporate noun stems. Some parallels between the constructions of the latter type and constructions with relational nouns are discussed as well.

АКУСТИЧЕСКИЕ КОРРЕЛЯТЫ ПРИЗНАКА ПРОДВИНУТОСТИ/ОТОДВИНУТОСТИ КОРНЯ ЯЗЫКА (±ATR) У ГЛАСНЫХ В ЯЗЫКЕ ИГБО

Аннотация: Гармония гласных по признаку продвинутости корня языка, или ±ATR, является характерной чертой языков макросуданского пояса Африки. Язык игбо (бенуэ-конголезская семья), на материале которого проводились первые инструментальные исследования артикуляции ±ATR, имеет несимметричную по ряду систему гласных /i, ɪ, e, a, ɔ, o, ʊ, u/, так что корневая гармония по этому признаку в нём существует в пределах трёх пар и одного не имеющего пары гласного /e/. Настоящая работа описывает акустическую реализацию ±ATR в языке игбо. Принимая гипотезу о том, что значение первой форманты гласного в комбинации с распределением энергии по частотам спектра образует единый перцептивный ключ, позволяющий различать противопоставленные по ±ATR гласные, мы наряду с описанием формантного пространства исследуем три спектральных параметра, которые показали себя акустическими коррелятами ±ATR в других макросуданских языках. Результаты инструментального анализа указывают на величину первой форманты, ширину её полосы и нормализованный центр тяжести гласного как на акустические корреляты ±ATR в языке игбо. Кроме того, по всем релевантным для контраста по ±ATR параметрам независимые произнесения /ɔ/ в наших данных разбиваются на две группы с разным значением этого признака.

Аннотация: THE PRESENTATION OF NOUN CLASS SYSTEMS OF NIGER-CONGO LANGUAGES

Abstract: The graphical presentation of Niger-Congo noun class systems shows considerable variation, which deserves a careful examination. The choices of presentation seem to depend on the mere fancy of authors: close languages may be presented in very different ways while different systems may be given very similar graphical choices. After consulting hundreds of descriptions of noun class languages of the Niger-Congo phylum, I could determine four major presentation types. This huge amount of information also allowed me to present new statistical data on the typology of the noun class systems of the phylum.

VOICELESS RHOTIC / RETROFLEX CONSONANTS AS AN AREAL FEATURE OF THE ATLANTIC LANGUAGES

Abstract: Voiceless rhotic or retroflex obstruents like [ʈʂ] or [tɹ̥] are rare in Africa, but the existence of a single such sound is relatively common among the Atlantic languages within Niger-Congo. The sound is not a shared retention across languages, but was repeatedly innovated through areal pressure. The sound can furthermore be reconstructed for multiple Atlantic protolanguages, and as such seems to have existed in the area for some time. This paper catalogues the occurrence of this rare sound in Atlantic languages as documented in existing sources, and suggests that due to its persistence in the area through time, it is relatively likely that the most recent common ancestor of the Atlantic languages contained a sound similar to [ʈ] or [ʈʂ], supporting existing proposals which reconstruct such a sound.

WHY EIGHT CAUSATIVE SUFFIXES IN WOLOF?

Abstract: Like other Atlantic languages, Wolof has a large inventory of verbal derivation suffixes, but is exceptionally well endowed for causative derivation with no less than eight different causative suffixes. This article analyzes the different values of these suffixes and reveals firstly a double gradient of distinctions concerning the degrees of involvement of the causer and the causee. Among these causative suffixes, two show a typologically rare specialization, one being specialized in sociative (assistive) causation, the other in the expression of indirect causation with obligatory omission of the causee. Three causative suffixes, rarely analyzed, combine a direct causation value with indications of the modalities of realization of the process, namely, incomplete, completing and corrective causation. Several of these causative suffixes are clearly complex but cannot be described as multiple suffixation synchronically. Various reconstruction hypotheses are nonetheless presented attesting to multiple derivation in the Atlantic family. Finally, this derivational abundance is compared with the general morphosyntactic strategies of Wolof.

NON-FINITE CONSTRUCTIONS IN WOLOF

Abstract: In this article, I study the concept of finiteness in Wolof. I propose a list of criteria for defining what a prototypical finite form is in this language. I am interested in the three constructions most distant from this prototype: the infinitive, the subjunctive-consecutive and the imperative. The subjunctive-consecutive and the infinitive have few characteristics of the prototype. The instantiations of these constructions can thus be considered as non-(fully)-finite forms. The imperative also has relatively few characteristics of the prototype. However, the characteristics that move the imperative away from prototypical finite forms are not the same as those noted for the subjunctive-consecutive and the infinitive. The imperative is therefore a specific predicative construction in this respect.

THE EMERGENCE OF AN ALTERNATIVE SET OF PREFIXES IN THE CLASS INFLECTION OF ADNOMINALS AND PRONOUNS IN JÓOLA FÓOÑI (ATLANTIC)

Abstract: In this article, we describe and analyze a set of alternative forms of class prefixes found in the inflection of adnominals and pronouns that have never been mentioned so far in the literature on Jóola Fóoñi. This alternative form of class prefixes differs from the standard form by the presence of a vowel a. We argue that the existence of the Ca-variant of the class prefixes of adnominals and pronouns is not related to the fact that some nouns have a Ca prefix, and results rather from the reanalysis of the prefixal sequence that characterizes participles as an alternative set of class prefixes whose use tends to be extended to other types of noun modifiers.

Идентификация заимствованной лексики среди городских фульбе Гвинеи

Аннотация: В работе предлагается описание исследования, проведённого среди носителей гвинейского пулар, с целью выяснить степень идентификации различных типов лексических заимствований в языке, а также факторы, влияющие и не влияющие на этот процесс. Для этого среди специально отобранных носителей различных диалектов гвинейского пулар была распространена анкета, содержащая список лексических заимствований. Заимствования, использованные для исследования, происходят из разных языков, имеют разную степень адаптированности, а также разную степень соответствия исконно фульской лексике. В результате опроса были получены как предсказуемые результаты, например, заимствования из прагматически значимого французского языка были опознаны полностью, так и менее предсказуемые, например, отсутствие корреляции между уровнем образования информанта и его способностью опознавать заимствования. Также была подтверждена и уточнена связь между степенью адаптации заимствования и лёгкостью его опознания.

GENITIVAL CONSTRUCTIONS IN EASTERN DAN

Abstract: In Eastern Dan (< Southern Mande < Mande < Niger-Congo), the common Mande strategies of marking genitival relations are available, namely head-marking by means of tone, and dependent-marking (by a specialized postposition) in the alienable possession construction. However, against this common background, some important modifications have evolved. The opposition between the head-marked and the head-unmarked constructions, although retained, has become semantically blurred: in the proto-language, the head-marked genitival construction had the semantics of “modification-by-noun”, while in the Eastern Dan this meaning has undergone erosion. In the dependent-marked constructions, a case-like opposition has emerged in the alienable possession constructions: different possessive markers (postpositions) are used depending on whether the head noun of an NP containing the possessive construction stands in the locative case or not. Other postpositions can also serve as markers of genitival relations. In addition, morphological case can sometimes serve to mark genitival relations.

CARITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS IN MWAN

Abstract: The paper deals with strategies for expressing caritive meanings in Mwan (Niger-Congo < Mande < South Mande). The difference between the strategies used in Mwan and in some other languages of the same family (Gban, Looma, Bambara) is discussed. Conclusions are made about the grammaticalization of constructions with the suffix -kle and the postposition blaan into specialized caritive means.

AT THE INTERSECTION OF SYNCHRONY AND DIACHRONY: A PHONOTACTIC ANALYSIS OF THE LEXICON OF WAN

Abstract: This study explores the phonotactics of Wan (Mande, Côte d’Ivoire) using an extended version of the lexical statistical method introduced in Pozdniakov & Segerer (2007). A lexical dataset was prepared for analysis based on nouns and verbs extracted from a dictionary. Disyllabic nouns and verbs were analyzed for correlations between the initial and the intervocalic consonant and for correlations between the two vowels. The analysis has confirmed the Similar Place Avoidance generalization proposed as a universal by Pozdniakov & Segerer. It has also revealed significant correlations between the two vowels on two parameters: in height, and in backness. Initial syllables of all nouns and verbs were analyzed for correlations between consonants and vowels and correlations between consonants and tone. The consonant’s place of articulation has been revealed to correlate with the vowel’s backness, and the consonant’s voicing has been revealed to correlate with the vowel’s tone. The results suggest that Pozdniakov & Segerer’s method can be useful not only when applied to a typological sample but also in the study of phonotactics of individual languages. The specific findings can potentially shed light on the history of Wan and related languages.

DAHL’S LAW AND G-DELETION IN TIANIA: A DIALECT OF KIMERU (BANTU, KENYA)

Abstract: In this paper we take a close look at the voicing dissimilation process known as Dahl’s Law (DL) in Tiania, an understudied variety of the Central Kenya Bantu Kimeru dialect cluster. While there is considerable variation in how this process applies in different Bantu languages, Tiania adds an additional dimension, the deletion of g, including non-post-nasal [g]’s which derive from /k/ by DL. Although other Bantu languages and even other dialects of Kimeru allow multiple applications of prefixal /k/’s dissimilation to g, usually pronounced [ɣ] (Davy & Nurse 1982), Tiania not only limits DL to /k/, but also restricts DL from applying to subject and (most) object prefixes. We consider the possibility that g-deletion contributed to these restrictions as well as to some unexpected realizations of the “pre-final” habitual suffix -ag.

**PROTO-BANTU K AND G IN THE MBAM LANGUAGES: A PROBLEM IN CLASSIFICATION

Abstract: The Bantu Mbam languages of Cameroun appear at first glance as a very coherent unit, in spite of having been put by Guthrie (1953) in two different groups (A40 and A60). Indeed they differ in their treatment of the two Proto-Bantu velar stops k and g, the latter being generally quite diagnostic in differentiating among larger Bantu units. This contribution will examine in detail the reflexes of the two proto-sounds, examine possible explanations and tentatively suggest directions for further research.

THE PHENOMENON OF MORPHEMIC AND SUBMORPHEMIC NEUTRALIZATION: EVIDENCE FROM PERSONAL PRONOUNS IN SOME ADAMAWA LANGUAGES

Abstract: The paper is based on the ideas of Konstantin Pozdniakov about morphemic and submorphemic neutralizations. He considers that full or partial coincidence of the form within the same paradigm is not accidental but rather is an important mechanism for “gluing” the elements of the paradigm. He also points out that morphemic and submorphemic neutralizations are in complementary distribution. The paper shows that it seems to be true for four pronominal paradigms of Adamawa languages which have never been analyzed from this point of view. The data show that the opposition of 1/2 person is very often submorphemically neutralized, opposing locutors to other pronouns. The whole system of pronouns tends to be “glued” by morphemic/submorphemic neutralizations, but sometimes the 3rd person seems to go out of the system (as in Yendang and Wakka), which should show a rather recent origin of 3rd person pronouns. Adamawa languages give good data for the theory of neutralization, and, on the other hand, the theory of neutralization can help in better understanding of Adamawa data.

FLOATING LOW TONE AND CONSONANT VOICING IN AKEBU

Abstract: The paper deals with floating low tone and consonant voicing in Akebu, historically induced by the nasal velar ŋ. The phenomena manifest in combination as nominal and agreement markers in a number of noun classes, as well as in independent pronouns. I argue against the analysis of paired voiced consonants as positional variants of their voiceless counterparts after the floating low tone found in the previous literature. This study proposes that floating low tone be considered only as a special case of the low tone and does not differ from the low tone on overt markers in any respect. Accordingly, paired voiced consonants are viewed as independent phonemes, while keeping in mind that they have acquired their phonemic status recently.

THE SOURCES OF NASAL VOWELS IN THE “CENTRAL” SARA LANGUAGES

Abstract: “Central” Sara languages (Chad and Central African Republic) are the only ones in their group that include nasal vowels. It has already been shown that this nasal feature could result from the weakening or loss of a neighbouring nasal consonant (ɲ). It is demonstrated here that other consonants had a similar effect, namely a nasalised retroflex lateral approximant (ɭ̃) as well as a glottal fricative (h) resulting from the historical merging of three voiceless plosives, velar (k), labial (p), and labial-velar (kp).

AFFIX KI IN OLD KANEMBU VERBS: A BACKGROUNDING PROGRESSIVE-COMPLETIVE CATEGORY

Abstract: Old Kanembu has an aspectual category that derives from imperfective stems by the affix ki. The ki-forms occur in conflicting aspectual domains, the main semantic discrepancy being between progressive and completive readings. The progressive-completive is a rare, but not non-existent, category in world languages, and Old Kanembu seems to be one such language. Completive events presuppose a phase of duration prior to the phase of completion. The selection of the aspectual phases in a given ki-form is determined by aspectual lexical semantics as well as by pragmatic and discourse factors of the situations described in Old Kanembu texts. The main unifying semantic and pragmatic property of various occurrences of ki-forms can be described as a liminal process which establishes background for the following (foregrounded) event.

THE VALUE OF “TRIANGULATION” IN DETERMINING PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIP: ON THE AREAL AND GENETIC CONNECTIONS OF THE BERTA LANGUAGES

Abstract: In this paper, I argue against a recent attempt at re-classifying the small group of Berta languages, spoken in Ethiopia, as being closely related to the geographically adjacent East Jebel group, based on numerous lexical similarities between the two taxa. It is suggested that the best method to determine if these similarities are due to common genetic descent or intense contact is to “triangulate” the lexical data by introducing another possible linguistic relative into the comparison. A simple lexicostatistical test shows that the Jebel languages show at least as strong a link with Nilotic languages as they do with Berta, while Berta and Nilotic, on the contrary, have very little in common. This is a significant argument that Jebel languages belong together with Nilotic in the East Sudanic family, while most of the lexical matches between Jebel and Berta are due to the latter’s strong lexical influence on the former.

HEART METAPHORS IN BEJA

Abstract: Cross-linguistically, body parts have been claimed to be universally recruited as a source domain for conceptual metaphors. This article presents a preliminary corpus-based study of the metaphorical constructions in which the noun ginʔa ‘heart’ is used in Beja, the sole language of the North-Cushitic branch (Afroasiatic). The semantic and syntactic particularities of the Beja metaphors are discussed within the background of the cognitive theory of embodiment and in comparison with other languages. It is shown that Beja makes use of the widespread metonymy heart for person, and several well-known metaphors, but displays a number of peculiarities in the choice of the collocations with ‘heart’, including in relation to the target semantic domains of the metaphors. Beja heart-based metaphors illustrate one more case of a language where this organ is conceived as the locus for both cognition and emotion, a double conception which seems to be rare among the languages of Africa.

Аннотация: THE CONJOINT/DISJOINT ALTERNATION IN BABANKI

Abstract: The conjoint (cj)/disjoint (dj) alternation, extensively documented in Narrow Bantu (see van der Wal & Hyman 2017 and references cited therein), Adamawa (Elders 2006), Benue-Kwa (Manfredi 2005), Nilo-Saharan (Joswig 2015), Gur (Fiedler 2017), has been reported in Bantoid only in Aghem and Ejagham (Anderson 1979, Watters 1979, Hyman & Watters 1984). Akumbu, Hyman & Kießling (2020) identify a much more extensive case, where the cj/dj contrast characterizes the affirmative perfective of all past, present and future tenses in Babanki, a Grassfields Bantu language of North-West Cameroon. Based on data I have compiled as a native speaker, in collaboration with four other native speakers, this study outlines the characteristics and conditions surrounding the choice of one form over the other in specific contexts. This detailed study reveals that the cj form encodes term focus since Babanki lacks a dedicated focus marker of the sort documented in closely related Aghem (Hyman 2010) and Isu (Kießling 2010), while the dj form is used contrastively with truth value focus and when the truth value is part of the assertion (i.e. not presupposed).

ISSUES ON SERIAL VERB CONSTRUCTIONS IN MEDUMBA

Abstract: This study attempts to account for the analysis of the interaction between the syntactic structure and the semantic outcome of serial verb constructions in Mə̀dʉmbà, an East Grassfields Bantu language spoken in the Nde division, West Region of Cameroon. It builds from natural data collected from field informants and native speakers’ intuitive knowledge of the language to provide an in-depth descriptive analysis of Mə̀dʉmbà serial verb constructions from a morpho-syntactic and semantic perspective. In this view, the article examines the structural characteristics of SVCs in the language and brings up a semantic typology of SVCs in Mə̀dʉmbà. The discussion of the morpho-syntactic manifestation of SVCs goes in line with Ameka (2005), while the overall analysis is undertaken from a descriptive grammar perspective. The paper also attempts a compositional semantic analysis of SVCs in the language.

TRANSLANGUAGED DISCOURSES OF BEMBA AND ENGLISH: THE MOBILITY AND MIXING OF LANGUAGES IN A MULTILINGUAL SPACE

Abstract: Couched within the overarching framework of translanguaging, this paper attempts to show the real-life language practices of social actors away from the dominant narratives of translanguaging in bilingual education. Predicated on the mixing and mobility of languages across time and space, the paper uses casual conversations from two multilingual spaces, a university campus, and a marketplace. Firstly, the paper shows the mixing of the English language and Bemba, a widely spoken indigenous language in Zambia while arguing that the Bemba-English translanguaged discourses provide evidence for the mobility and the disembodiment of language and locality. Secondly, the paper argues that the spread and circulation of Bemba in multiple localities should be seen as the mobility of bits and pieces and/or resources akin to urbanity and hybridity. The paper concludes by bringing into the spotlight the dynamics of the Bemba-English translanguaged discourses in which morphemes as semiotic resources create new lexical items which destabilize expected linguistic norms and boundaries.

YORUBA NÍ AND SÍ: AN ASYMMETRY IN THE CLASS OF PREPOSITIONS

Abstract: This paper examines two grammatical elements ní and sí which have been considered as prepositions in the grammar of Yoruba (Benue-Congo). We argue that these two elements belong to different word classes; ní is a preposition, while sí is a verb. We present novel data that show syntactic asymmetries that exist between the two elements: behavior under extraction, the possibility of pseudocleft formation, the order of the phrases in a clause, iteration, formation of complex prepositions, and subcategorization. The ní-phrase acts like an adjunct phrase but this is not so with the sí-phrase. The adjunct phrase is a prepositional phrase headed by ní. It is demonstrated that the preposition constitutes a phase head in Yoruba, thus movement out of the PP is banned, which explains the lack of preposition stranding with ní. The element sí, on the other hand, can be stranded. It is argued that sí is the non-initial verb in a serial verb construction.

Аннотация: “NARRATING THE NATION”: KENYA’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE IN THE NOVELS OF MWENDA MBATIAH

Abstract: The article analyses the vision of Kenya’s recent history, its present and its foreseeable future as presented in several novels by Mwenda Mbatiah, one of the country’s leading writers of Swahili expression. In Mbatiah’s vision, Kenyan history appears as the “chain of heritage”, in which the mistakes and misdeeds of the past, such as the betrayal of the nation’s expectations in the early years of independence, have stipulated the emergence of the malfunctioning political and economic system in “Nyayo years”, which in its own turn may lead to even grimmer developments in the future. At the same time, the author offers a positive alternative, which he sees in the combined constructive effort of the people – this, according to him, may even change the existing social structures for the better.

AN ACCOUNT OF AGENTIVE SUFFIXES IN LUGANDA

Abstract: This article is situated within the theoretical context of Word-Formation and the Weak Lexicalism framework. It examines agent noun formation in Luganda, an East African Bantu language. Using an electronic journalistic corpus from a Luganda daily, this study specifically analyses the formation of de-verbal agent nouns and the corresponding morphological paradigms of suffixation. The results demonstrate, in contrast with findings made by Ferrari-Bridgers (2009), that agentive suffixes exist in Luganda, dominated by the suffix -i.

DEPENDENT CLAUSES AND FOCUS PARTICLE IN KAKABE

Abstract: The paper deals with the syntax of focalization in Kakabe (Mokole < Western Mande). By default, the argument focus is marked by a specialized particle lɛ̀ following the focused constituent, which remains in situ. To mark the sentence focus, lɛ̀ usually follows the subject. lɛ̀ cannot appear inside adverbial and relative subordinate clauses, in infinitive constructions; it cannot follow most adverbial expressions. At the same time, it can be hosted by adverbs and postpositional phrases of time, manner and place.

Аннотация: ПРОСТРАНСТВЕННЫЕ ОТНОШЕНИЯ И СРЕДСТВА ИХ ВЫРАЖЕНИЯ В ЯЗЫКЕ ДАБИДА (БАНТУ)

Аннотация: Статья посвящена различным языковым средствам, используемым в языке дабида (банту Е74а) для выражения пространственных отношений. В статье рассматриваются локативный класс 16, утративший в дабида деривативную функцию и имеющий лишь одну исконную лексему – существительное andu ‘место’, локативные дериваты с инновативным суффиксом -ɲi, а также топонимы. Особое внимание уделено синтаксической дистрибуции данных лексем, а также особенностям согласования зависимых с локативными вершинами внутри именной группы и согласования глагольных форм с локативными субъектными и объектными именными группами. Помимо именных лексем в статье описываются две группы пространственных предлогов, участвующих в выражении локализации и направления перемещения объекта относительно ориентира. Особое внимание уделено реализации в дабида стратегии чистой локализации, при которой семантическая роль ориентира как места, источника или цели движения кодируется не локативной конструкцией, обозначающей ориентир, а в семантике и модели управления предиката.

CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEMS OF KIRUNDI (BANTU, JD62) AND KISWAHILI (BANTU, G42)

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify potential sites of interlingual errors based on phonological dissimilarities between Kirundi and Kiswahili. In this way, it aims to enable Kiswahili teachers to anticipate phonological errors made by learners under the influence of Kirundi. By a methodological approach based essentially on the comparison of phonological systems and the prediction of errors, two categories of results were obtained. On the one hand, some phonological differences do not necessarily lead to interlingual errors in Kiswahili: this is the case of /e/, /o/ (Kirundi) versus /ɛ/, /ɔ/ (Kiswahili), which do not give rise to negative transfers in Kiswahili. On the other hand, a number of phonological facts of Kirundi are likely to be the cause of the following errors: (i) the misrealization of the consonants /Ɉ/, /θ/, /ð/, /ɣ/ and /ŋ/, (ii) the insertion of the consonants /j/, /w/, /l/, /r/ or /h/ between successive vowels, (iii) the velarization of consonants in CS- sequences, (iv) the sonorization of the consonant /k/ in infinitive verbs, (v) the use of allophones [b]/[β] of Kirundi, (vi) the transformation of closed syllables into open syllables by adding a vowel to the coda. All these interlingual errors are verifiable in local Kiswahili thanks to the already existing contrastive works.

Аннотация: ANIMAL-BASED METAPHORS IN IGBO

Abstract: The study examined animal-based metaphors in Igbo with a focus on their cultural and contextual meanings and interpretations. It adopted the pragmatic methodological approach involving interviews with 20 participants drawn from various Igbo culture areas to collect animal-based metaphors as well as their meanings and interpretations. Introspection also featured in data collection as the authors are native speakers of Igbo. The study revealed that animal-based metaphors are used to describe human personality, conduct or behavior. This is essentially by the process of associating some features or attributes of the animals with human conduct and personality. The study further identified that some metaphors could be used in dual metaphorical sense, i.e., derogatory/negative and commendatory/positive, and these depend on the cultural connotations as well as contextual meanings and interpretations of the referents. The study concludes that animal-based metaphors in the Igbo language and culture reflect and represent the description of a person, conduct or behavior, as well as beliefs and realities among the Igbo.

PERFECTIVITY AND PREDICATE-CENTERED FOCUS IN NARRATIVE: FUNCTIONS OF “STRONG” FORMS IN KOYRABORO SENNI

Abstract: Koyraboro Senni (KS), a Malian language of the Songhay family, has a system of TAM markers that distinguish two aspectual categories – the perfective and the imperfective – and three series: the “weak” series used in neutral declarative clauses and clauses with a non-subject focus, the subject-focus series, and the “strong” series, which is used for predicate-centered focus. The paper studies the use of the strong in-focus forms in a corpus of narrative texts and shows that the strong perfectives in most cases are used to describe real events, while strong imperfectives are irrealis-oriented. Contrary to implications of our current knowledge of polyfunctionality of in-focus forms, the strong imperfective is not used for the present progressive and is relatively frequent in narrative texts. I also argue that while the perfective part of the system is better understood as the result of the development of a typical intrinsically focused reading – the perfect – its imperfective part is better explained in line with Tatevosov’s (2005) proposal of direct development of the habitual to the prospective.

INTERPERSONAL SYMBOLIC COMMUNICATIVE PRACTICES IN THE TRADITIONAL IGBO SOCIETY

Abstract: This study examines interpersonal symbolic communication in the traditional Igbo society, which entails a culturally learned, often nuanced, socially shared system of communication between individuals by the use of instruments as symbols, in which the relation between the symbol and the signified concept is arbitrary. Data for the study were drawn from oral interviews and participant observation as primary sources, while secondary sources were library materials and the internet. Findings indicate that there exists yet another form of non-verbal communication that is symbolic (involves symbols) and is exclusively interpersonal in “the various Igbo culture areas” (Onwuejeogwu 1975). The examples are subclassified based on what they communicate. The study concludes that interpersonal symbolic communicative practices could be used as tools in interesting and complex ways for the description and reproduction of the varied sociocultural world of the Igbo.

Аннотация: В статье представлен обзор письменной традиции киарабу на языке суахили в арабской графике, издавна являвшейся важным компонентом мусульманской суахилийской цивилизации восточноафриканского побережья и примыкающих к нему островов Индийского океана, в которую объединялся со Средних веков ряд портовых городов-султанатов, расположенных на большой протяженности от юга современного Сомали до севера Мозамбика. В колониальный период этот вид грамотности оказался постепенно вытесненным из культуры в связи с переходом на латиницу в рамках проекта стандартизации суахили и его перехода в статус официального языка в Британской Восточной Африке. Тем не менее, в новейшей истории известны случаи, когда поэты-традиционалисты в целях манифестации своей суахилийской идентичности продолжают записывать свои сочинения с помощью новых авторских модификаций киарабу.

Аннотация: NAVIGATING MULTILINGUALISM: TRANSLATING LOCAL LANGUAGE POLICIES FOR INCLUSIVE EDUCATION IN KENYA

Abstract: Language promotes inclusion, diversity, and equity within Kenyan communities. In a multilingual society like Kenya, local languages are essential for social cohesion, identity formation, and equal access to education and public services. However, indigenous languages remain underutilized, particularly in the formal education system, limiting their potential to foster cross-cultural communication and social integration. This paper explores the impact of local language policies on inclusion and equity, focusing on the challenges Dholuo translators face in interpreting English policy documents. Based on interviews with Education Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (EQASOs) from Homabay and Migori counties, alongside secondary data, the study examines how local language promotion can enhance social inclusion, career development, and equitable access to resources. The study analyzed the constitutional mandate in promoting Kenyan Indigenous languages and offered strategies to overcome language barriers in education and governance.

REFLECTIONS ON ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY IN MODERN SWAHILI PROSE

Abstract: This study sets out to outline the reflection of two predominant religions of Eastern Africa – Islam and Christianity – in the works of modern (20th- and 21st-century) writers of Swahili expression. It must be noted that, although the theme of religion is rather notable in modern Swahili writing, the critical works devoted to the theme are lamentably scarce (among them, for example, articles by Sonja Mezger and Fuko Onoda mentioned below). This renders the study considerably relevant, since it is an attempt to start filling a notable gap in the scholarship of modern Swahili writing. Based on the comparative examination of the works of writers from Tanzania and Kenya, the study investigates, specifically, the writers’ views on the current relationship between the two religions and their prospective relations in the future.

ADVERBS IN DABIDA: KEY ISSUES

Abstract: The present paper investigates adverbs that constitute one of the major word classes in Dabida Bantu (E74a). Cross-linguistically, adverbs are uninflected lexemes that serve as a modifier of a verb, of an adjective or another adverb, and even of a sentence. This paper offers a descriptive analysis of the morphology, derivation, semantics, and syntactic behavior of the Dabida words of this category. In addition, the paper describes the derivational and functional features of spatial and temporal pronominal adverbs derived from the demonstrative and possessive pronouns in noun class 16 (locative) agreement. Multi-word adverbials are under description in the scope of this article, too.

Аннотация: THE ASPECT-TENSE SYSTEM WITH DEICTIC VALUE IN KIRUNDI (BANTU, JD62)

Abstract: The objective of this article is to represent the aspect-tense system of Kirundi on the tenseline by taking into account all the synthetic and analytical combinations attested in the language. On the basis of the theory of deictic tense, which considers that tense, aspect and mood constitute an indivisible whole where one of these three values is always dominant, Kirundi no longer distinguishes only four tenses (distant past, recent past, present, future). The aspect-tense nature of this language always requires combinations of tense, aspect, and mood that express deictic tense values whose reference point on the tenseline is the perfective present. Other absolute tense values (distant past perfective, distant past imperfective, recent past perfective, recent past imperfective, present imperfective, future imperfective) complete the tenseline. Compared to the different absolute tenses, relative absolute tense values expressed by constructions with auxiliary verbs are placed indirectly on the tenseline.

PORTRAYAL OF MEN IN SWAHILI PROVERBS

Abstract: While gender issues in Africa have been a rich area of study, the focus has been on issues related to women. This paper attempts to fill the gap that exists in the literature by taking a nuanced look at the depiction of men through the lens of gendered Swahili proverbs. Proverbs have long been the subject of many studies as they are useful in the identification of societal norms and taboos. The didactic nature of proverbs is particularly enlightening when investigating the expected set of behaviour for each member of society. The paper seeks to investigate masculinity among the Swahili with key focus on gender-specific characterizations and roles played by husbands and fathers. The study looks at the depiction of men as husbands and fathers to find out which stereotypes and gender roles are assigned to men and how the relevant Swahili proverbs are used to advance societal prescriptions and expectations. The paper utilizes Critical Discourse Analysis to scrutinize the proverbs to reveal the gender roles assigned to husbands and fathers and to analyse the male stereotypes embedded therein. Furthermore, Ambivalent Sexism Theory is used to underpin the analysis and the interpretation of the proverbs.

SWAHILI RIDDLES AS COGNITIVE TOOLS: METAPHOR AND METONYMY IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Abstract: Metaphor and metonymy are central to human cognition and language use, yet the process through which individuals, especially children, acquire the ability to use these conceptual tools remains an important question. This paper argues that riddling, as practiced in African communities, particularly among Swahili speakers, plays a significant role in developing metaphorical and metonymic competence. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Constructivist Theory (CT), the study demonstrates how riddles serve as culturally embedded cognitive tools that support abstract reasoning and language acquisition. Through qualitative analysis of Swahili riddles, the paper illustrates how their linguistic structures, characterized by phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic parallelism, mirror the conceptual mappings inherent in metaphor and metonymy. Examples from everyday life, computer terminology, and science pedagogy highlight how riddles facilitate understanding of abstract ideas through familiar domains. By examining ten validated riddles (five metaphorical, five metonymic), the study reveals their pedagogical value in fostering critical thinking, figurative language use, and cultural literacy. Ultimately, the paper advocates for the integration of indigenous knowledge systems, such as riddling, into contemporary education. Doing so not only enriches language instruction but also supports a decolonial pedagogy that values African epistemologies and oral traditions.

CHUKWUDILE’S ONYE IJE: A POETIC EVALUATION OF IGBO IDEOLOGY ON MIGRATION

Abstract: In the Igbo belief system, migration to other regions of the earth is seen as a way of life, hence the predisposition of the Igbo to migrate. Literary works on various aspects of the Igbo belief system have been undertaken by researchers, but not much attention has been paid to scholarly works on the phenomenon of Igbo migration. Consequently, this study examines the concept of migration from the perspective of an Igbo poet with a view to exploring the ideology behind it. Louis de Bonald’s Mirror Theory of the sociology of literature was used as a guide. Chukwudile’s poem “Onye Ije” in Utara Nti, an anthology of Igbo poems by E. M. Emenanjo (1979), was purposively selected for the study. The result reveals that the Igbo sojourn for the purpose of economic advancement and development. A fundamental aspect of the experience is their willingness to adapt to the culture of their host communities; by becoming less of themselves and more like the hosts, they are well positioned to mingle and relate with the host culture and eventually reap the benefits and resources in the host domain. It was also found that, due to their propensity for travel, they are easily misunderstood by outsiders as homeless vagrants. The poem reveals that the essence of Igbo itinerary is to amass wealth and thereafter repatriate it home for the purpose of attracting the eulogy of the community. In addition, the poem reveals the belief shared among the Igbo that making positive sacrifices for wealth is integral to wealth management. It is for these reasons that the poet lauds the migrant, seeing them as people who deserve the acknowledgement and commendation of society. This study submits that other ethnic groups should imbibe the Igbo ideology of migration for the purpose of diversity and inclusion, which Nigerian society needs to achieve social and political advancement.

Аннотация: PHRASAL VERBS, PROGRESSIVES, AND SVO/SOV ORDER IN PERE (CÔTE D’IVOIRE)

Abstract: The severely endangered and genetically semi-isolated language Pere (aka Bere, Mbre) in Côte d’Ivoire, with thirty active speakers as of fieldwork in 2018, shares with some other West African languages an aspectually governed alternation between S-V-O… and S Aux O V… clauses. In Pere the latter takes the approximate form S-‘be’-[[O-V]-Loc]… and functions as progressive, while S-V-O is regular for (habitual) imperfectives and all perfectives. Imperatives are likewise V-O. Progressive S-‘be’-[[O-V]-Loc]… reconstructs internally to S ‘be’ [[O VblN] Loc]… with a verbal noun, an incorporated object noun, and a locative postposition. However, the structure is now opaque since O is an open-ended NP, there is no overt VblN morphology, and even ‘be’ and the locative postposition are subject to reinterpretation as progressive morphemes: S Prog O V.Prog Prog… The progressive makes it possible to distinguish a clause with a true postpositional phrase S-V-[NP-P] from an English-like phrasal-verb construction with a pseudo-postposition P′, namely S-V-O-P′…. Because O in S-V-O-P′… is a real direct object, it shifts to preverbal position in the progressive, leaving P′ encliticized to the verb: S Prog O V.Prog P′… Three regular postpositions (locative, instrumental, ‘in front of’) have homophonous pseudo-postpositions. As in English, the meaning of a Pere phrasal verb combination is lexicalized and semantically unpredictable.

АКТАНТНАЯ ДЕРИВАЦИЯ В ЯЗЫКЕ ДАБИДА

Аннотация: В статье рассматриваются три типа глагольной актантной деривации в языке дабида – каузатив, декаузатив и аппликатив. Предлагается описание формальных средств образования глагольных дериватов – аффиксальных показателей, помещаемых в составе глагольной словоформы непосредственно после корня, и их алломорфов. Помимо синтетического каузатива анализируется также аналитический каузатив. Первоочередная функция рассматриваемых показателей связана с перестройкой актантной структуры глагола, в связи с чем в статье подробно изложены семантико-синтаксические преобразования исходной глагольной конструкции, маркируемые в глагольной словоформе при помощи показателей актантной деривации. Рассмотренное в типологическом контексте распределение каузативных и декаузативных дериватов на множестве глагольной лексики дабида в целом отвечает отмеченным в литературе тенденциям.

FOLKTALE AS A TRADITIONAL MENTORSHIP GENRE AMONG THE IGBO OF SOUTH EAST NIGERIA: TRADITION AND INNOVATIONS IN THE MODE OF DELIVERY

Abstract: Among the Igbo, South East of Nigeria, folktales serve as fixed or stock narratives/stories, rooted in the infinity of ancestry and used to teach children about their roots, tradition, culture, character and sense of responsibility. Folktales were strictly orally or verbally delivered and meant to be so transferred from generation to generation. Folktales that carried the moral lessons of virtue were meant to be emulated, while those that depicted immorality, wickedness and other vices were warnings against such vices and meant to be jettisoned. In this paper, the authors have traced how a traditional narrative genre, meant to be stable or fixed in its structure and mode of delivery, is undergoing rapid development, transformation or changes, which the authors consider to be largely positive and innovative. The findings from this study include flourishing interest in folktales as a research and scholarship area, electronic documentation of them into radio and television dramas, home video films, modern community entertainment dances/dramas, and full-length folktale-based story/narrative books. These developments indicate diversification and promotion of the method and mode of delivery of the Igbo folktale. It was also found that this diversification of the Igbo folktale beyond the primary (verbal/oral) communication mode to the secondary sources has popularized the Igbo folktale and, to a reasonable extent, the language, in other languages and cultures. However, the authors are of the view that the current practice of translating Igbo folktales into English mutes the outcome and violates the interlingual translatability criteria of such a language-specific genre, except where the source language footage is accommodated.

THE TAM SYSTEM OF SHUPAMEM

Abstract: This paper examines the tense, aspect, and mood (TAM) system of Shupamem, a language spoken in Western Cameroon, highlighting its complexity and divergence from the familiar past, present, and future distinctions found in English. Drawing on empirical data collected from native speakers through questionnaires, supplemented by existing literature and language corpora, the study investigates the morphological encoding of TAM in Shupamem. The analysis reveals that, unlike English, where tense is typically marked within the verb (e.g., ‘walked’, ‘goes’), Shupamem encodes tense through preverbal prefixes. For instance, infinitives are marked by the prefix jiN- (e.g., jìn-tá ‘to kick’, jì-mbǎʔ ‘to open’, jì-ŋkʉ̌ ‘to cry’). The present tense in Shupamem is obligatorily accompanied by aspectual markers, distinguishing between ongoing actions (progressive), witnessed events (evidential), and habitual occurrences. The past tense system is subdivided into four categories, each reflecting a different degree of temporal remoteness, with markers such as pé (recent past) and kàpí (remote past) encoding these distinctions. Similarly, the future tense is expressed through three sub-tenses, marked by morphemes like nántwǝ (immediate future), náloʔ (intermediate future), and nántwǝloʔ (remote future). Imperative constructions are formed by placing the verb stem directly after the pronoun, resulting in a streamlined structure. Overall, the study demonstrates that Shupamem’s TAM system, with its preverbal markers, aspectual distinctions in the present, and nuanced sub-tenses for the past and future, provides valuable insights into the diverse strategies languages employ to encode temporality.

Аннотация: MANDE AND BANTU IN THE NIGER-CONGO CONTEXT

Abstract: That the Mande family belongs to the Niger-Congo macro-family was first proposed by Joseph Greenberg in the middle of the 20th century. Over the last two decades this affiliation has regularly been questioned, the main argument for skepticism being the well-known fact that there is no trace of any noun class in Mande. Our study proves that these doubts are groundless as far as the lexicon is concerned. Our conclusion is based on the following arguments, which appear to be sufficient for the establishment of a relationship between Mande and Bantu and, consequently, for the inclusion of Mande in Niger-Congo:

• In the basic vocabulary, the average cognacy rate of contemporary Mande languages with Proto-Bantu is higher than the rate for other families whose membership in the Niger-Congo macro-family is uncontested.

• In the basic vocabulary, the number of phonetic similarities actually observed far exceeds the number expected on the basis of random coincidence alone.

• In the basic vocabulary, Proto-Bantu and Proto-Mande are considerably closer to each other than contemporary Bantu and Mande languages are.

• Phonetic correspondences between Proto-Bantu and Proto-Mande are not only regular, but also proportional, which excludes the possibility that they are merely fortuitous.

• In the basic vocabulary, the distribution of roots by their stability in the Mande family displays a strong positive correlation with their distribution in the other Niger-Congo families.

If we establish cognacy between specific Mande and Bantu roots, these roots can be regarded as candidates for membership in the Niger-Congo common lexical stock. We thus provide materials for a Proto-Niger-Congo comparative etymological dictionary: 207 common roots and their probable reflexes in contemporary languages and lower-level proto-languages are proposed for future discussion by specialists.

Аннотация: PHONETICS PUSHING SYNTAX: S/AUX FUSION AND THE RISE OF SUBJECT CROSS-REFERENCE IN MANDE

Abstract: This paper investigates how the fusion between subject person markers and auxiliaries is related to the rise of subject cross-reference, based on a sample of 28 Mande languages (Niger-Congo, West Africa). Building my microtypology on two independent parameters, i.e. S/Aux fusion and subject cross-reference, I demonstrate that the distribution of language types reveals an implicational relationship between the two parameters in Mande: no S/Aux fusion implies no subject cross-reference, and subject cross-reference implies S/Aux fusion. This distribution suggests that S/Aux fusion may trigger the rise of subject cross-reference. To account for this, I argue that in constructions with strong S/Aux fusion and no subject cross-reference, non-fused predicative markers are replaced by fused person-predicative markers within the same syntactic slot, i.e. Aux. This process is driven by low textual frequency of non-fused predicative markers and strong phonetic erosion of predicative markers within person-predicative forms.

LANGUAGE CONTACT AND CHANGE IN EASTERN BOTSWANA: NEW INSIGHTS FROM THE PRONOMINAL SYSTEM OF AN UNDOCUMENTED KALAHARI KHOE LANGUAGE

Abstract: This study contributes to the documentation and description of the diversity of Kalahari Khoe languages in eastern Botswana. Kalahari Khoe languages have highly complex pronominal systems with extensive paradigms of portmanteau morphemes encoding person, gender, and number categories. This study focuses on Thabala Tchoe, an entirely undocumented Kalahari Khoe language. Features of the Thabala Tchoe pronominal system set it apart from descriptions of closely and more distantly related languages. In this paper, I offer a formal and functional analysis of these features, which include honorific and focus sensitive pronouns, and innovative forms which offer contemporary evidence for the historical development of the complex pronominal system. This analysis is explored against the background of historical contact patterns between different Kalahari Khoe speech communities and Tswana merafe, or 'clans', in region.

THE MORPHEMIC STRUCTURE OF THE NDONDE VERB

Abstract: The article is devoted to the initial description of the previously undescribed minority language Ndonde and is based on field data obtained by the authors from informants in the province of Mtwara in southeastern Tanzania. The morphemic structures of the Ndonde verb and the features of their affixal implementation on the aspectual-temporal-modal level are considered. The data collected using the structural method of describing a language new to Bantu studies will make it possible to contribute to the general problems of the extremely complex and multifaceted system of the Bantu verb.

THE NEUTRAL ASPECT IN EASTERN DAN

Abstract: The paper deals with a default aspectual construction in Eastern Dan (< Southern Mande < Mande < Niger-Congo). This construction may express different aspectual meanings, depending on the lexical semantics of a verb, on the presence or absence of a direct object or an adverbial, and on the pragmatic status of the argument: habitual, stative, counter-factual, progressive, imperfect, resultative or perfect, and completive meanings are all attested. At the same time, Eastern Dan has specialized verbal constructions for most of these aspectual meanings. In the paper, conditions for the realization of different aspectual meanings are discussed. A hypothesis on the origin of this construction is suggested.

Abstract: The paper deals with vowel and consonant assimilation in Dabida, Bantu (E74a). While often exhibiting vowel sequences, Dabida nevertheless presents a lot of cases of contact and distant vowel assimilation occurring in verbal roots, stems, suffixes, noun final -a, attributive and presentative demonstratives. Consonant assimilation occurs with nasal prefix [N-] (of noun classes 9/10) homorganic to root initial voiced stops and affricates. All types of assimilation in Dabida belong to the category of morphophonemic rules, but not to phonetic ones.

MAASAI TOPONYMY IN KENYA

Abstract: The Maasai are the ethnic group that represents the cultural face of Kenya. This paper discusses placenames that are of Maasai origins and the discussion reveals that the Maasai were keen observers of the natural environment and its content. The Maasai named places based on environmental conditions, physical features, fauna and flora, as well as after social functions. Placenames of Maasai origins reflect the historical migration of the Maasai. From the description, it emerges that through contact with other ethnic languages as well as English, Maasai placenames have been linguistically adapted. The paper concludes that Maasai placenames remain resourceful records of ethnic as well as a nation’s history, a measure of environmental change or degradation.

Аннотация: В статье рассматривается процесс формирования полиэтнического и многоязычного населения на Маврикии. Обсуждается формирование и функционирование франкоязычного креольского языка креоль-морисьен, его роль в жизни маврикийского общества. Проблема преобладающей роли креоль-морисьен как языка устного общения и его незначительное использование в качестве письменного языка существенно замедляет его дальнейшее развитие. Отсутствие признания письменных норм языка всем населением острова мешает ему стать общенациональным языком страны. Дальнейшее развитие языка тесно связано с языковой политикой государства, которая в настоящее время четко не сформулирована.

REDUCTION OF NOUN CLASS SUFFIXES IN AKEBU

Abstract: This paper presents a pilot instrumental study of phonetic reduction of noun class suffixes in Akebu (Kwa, Ghana-Togo mountain, West Africa). Noun class suffixes starting with a glide are regularly perceived as omitted or almost omitted, and therefore full and reduced variants can be distinguished for such nouns. A formant measurement of final parts of full and reduced forms of the same nouns has shown that, first, for a given final part of a noun stem the reduced variant is phonetically close to the corresponding full variant and, second, for a given final part of a noun stem the forms with reduction of different suffixes are phonetically different.

Аннотация: THE JEN LANGUAGE CLUSTER: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF WORDLISTS

Abstract: A lexicostatistical analysis divides the Jen language cluster into two primary branches Burak-Loo-Maghdi-Mak and Kyak-Moo-Leelau-Tha-Doso-Dza. This is also supported by extensive isoglosses, replacing the older Bikwin-Jen division at least for purposes of genetic classification. For vowels, a 9-vowel system is reconstructed, but its 3-way height contrasts appear unstable in some languages, either in the central vowels or in the front and back vowels. Front and back vowels also vary widely with diphthongs. Prosodic features of nasalisation, tone, and breathiness are reconstructed, with nasalisation developing in more roots in the second primary branch. For consonants, the large inventory includes particularly unstable coronals, and development of voiceless approximants in Doso-Dza. The comparative evidence is conflicting as to whether labialised and palatalised structures are secondary modifications or onset sequences, suggesting the need for a variationist approach. Overall, riverine Jen varieties Tha, Doso, Dza show unusually extensive sound change, in contrast to the more phonologically stable Bikwin varieties. Applications to orthography development include the need to represent implosives and /r/ in languages other than Dza, where they have been lost, and the need to represent vowel nasalisation and /h/ in languages of the second branch only. Initial stem consonant alternations seen in both nouns and verbs need more investigation in Jen languages.

THE INTERNAL RECONSTRUCTION OF BENA-YUNGUR CONSONANTS AND TONE PATTERNS

Abstract: This paper provides proposals for the internal reconstruction of Bena-Yungur [Glottocode: bena1260]. The present-day three-tone system of Bena-Yungur with an opposition between H, M and L must result from a relatively recent process of tonogenesis in which L tones were reinterpreted as M whenever they were not realised extra low due to a preceding voiced stop that acted as a depressor consonant. Although subsequent changes have somewhat blurred the correlation between tones and segments, this correlation still proves highly relevant for the internal reconstruction of the laryngeal settings of stem-initial consonants. We also show that the contemporary Bena-Yungur lexical tone patterns are the result of the neutralisation of a higher number of previously existing patterns due to the application of tone rules. The former distinctions between different tone patterns are still observable in the genitive construction for nouns and in positive perfective forms and product nominalisations for verbs. This allows us to reconstruct the original tone patterns of nouns and verbs, as well as aspects of the genitive construction and perfective verb forms. Remarkably, the tonal reconstruction makes it clear that the direction of tonal interactions must have shifted from anticipatory to perseveratory in the history of Bena-Yungur.

PLURALITY MARKING IN LEKO AND YENDANG GROUPS (ADAMAWA, NIGER-CONGO) WITH SOME REFERENCE TO NOUN CLASSIFICATION

Abstract: The article presents the available data about plurality marking in two groups (Leko and Yendang) of a hypothetical genetic unit known as Adamawa languages. It shows various strategies that languages of these two groups use in marking plurality. The main focus is made on Nyong and Maya (Bali) languages with which the author worked during field research in Adamawa State (Nigeria). The data of some other languages of these groups (Samba Leko, Kpasham (Sam), Kugama (Wam), Yendang and Waka) are also taken into consideration. This study offers a comparison of plurality strategies in these languages that helps in distinguishing conservative and innovative elements in plurality marking. It also shows some cases of possible plurality/noun class interaction.

THE PHONOLOGY AND NOUN MORPHOLOGY OF YI KITƱLΕ, AN ADAMAWA LANGUAGE OF EAST-CENTRAL NIGERIA

Abstract: The paper describes the phonology and nominal morphology of KItʊlε, an Adamawa language of the Tula-Waja group, spoken in East-Central Nigeria. KItʊlε has a restricted consonant inventory, marked by a loss of voicing contrast in most consonants. It has a system of ATR vowel harmony, which has begun to erode in many lexical items. There are three level tones plus rising and falling glides. The underlying system of nominal number marking is suffix alternation as with the other languages in the group, but this has undergone numerous alterations, in part due to the addition of prefix alterations, and fossilised suffixes which have been incorporated into the stem. Some of these then appear as infixes, although this is not the underlying system. A note on demonstratives is appended, which shows that these are not directly concordial, but which have a broad semantic logic.

THE BUA GROUP NOUN CLASS SYSTEM: LOOKING FOR A HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION

Abstract: The way Bua languages express number on nouns mostly consists of alternating suffixes that bear witness of a former classification system. However, Kulaal is the only present-day language where these markers are not frozen but actually trigger agreement with free, optional determiners that follow the noun and may show some formal affinity with its suffix. For several reasons, previous attempts at reconstructing a historical noun morphology common to all Bua languages considered the sole suffixes and neglected the determiners present in Kulaal. But, as is argued in the present paper, more recent data show that, in some cases, present-day suffixes may result from the association of a former suffix with an element similar to one of the Kulaal determiners. In such cases the former determiner has simply lost its independence and been historically stacked onto the noun form.

THE NUMERAL SYSTEM IN LONGUDA

Abstract: This article gives an overview of the cardinal and ordinal numerals in Longuda, a language cluster in north-eastern Nigeria, belonging to the Adamawa branch of the Niger-Congo languages. It focuses on three of its five varieties, namely Deele, Guyuk and Gwaanda, analysing the morphology of the numerals, their behaviour in a noun phrase and the derivation of ordinal numerals from cardinal numerals. It becomes clear that numerals in Longuda are neither adjectives nor nouns but should rather be analysed as being on a scale in-between those lexical categories. The tendency in the languages of the world that lower ordinal numerals are suppletive forms while higher ones are regularly derived from cardinal numerals applies to Longuda as well. At the end of the article, the findings of Longuda numerals are compared to other Adamawa languages and the Niger-Congo family as a whole as compiled by Boyd (1989) and Pozdniakov (2018).

THE CONTROL MARKER NA ~ NA W IN SAMBA LEKO, A LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN CAMEROON – NIGERIA

Abstract: The term na ~ na w can only appear clause-finally in Samba Leko. Depending on the instance, it belongs to paradigms of either locative postpositions or expressive particles and must therefore be considered polyfunctional in the terminology of Robert (2003). na ~ na w is identified by speakers as identical in all its attestations and is always glossed as ‘in hand’. The interpretation of na ~ na w as an expression of control would need to be supported by further ethnolinguistic investigation but is still helpful for explaining its range of uses. The analysis of this term given in another paper is first summarized, and its implications in the wider context of Adamawa languages in general are then discussed.

ADPOSITIONAL EXPRESSION OF SPATIALITY IN ADAMAWA LANGUAGES WITH FOCUS ON THE SAMBA-DURU GROUP

Abstract: A recurrent topic in language typology are adpositions within a cross-linguistic perspective. This paper questions whether there are similarities in form and function of spatial adpositions in Adamawa languages. Based on data of existing grammars and fieldwork results, form and function of the adpositions in question will be presented and discussed. The main result is that almost all languages show a generic adposition expressing spatial relations in general. First a theoretical overview about formal and functional features of adpositions is presented. This is completed with an excerpt of the relation between spatial marking and noun classes and a short introduction in spatial deixis. The theoretical explanations are followed by an empirical comparative study which attempts to empirically back up the theoretical conclusions and presents the results.

PERSONAL PRONOUNS IN BUA LANGUAGES

Abstract: Bua languages in general are poorly documented and many aspects of their morphosyntax are still undescribed. The purpose of this paper is to outline a state of the art concerning the structure and operation of the personal pronoun systems. Largely based on unpublished or restricted documentation, it systematically reviews the systems of eight languages, commenting on both the identity of persons and the types of functional paradigms. Despite numerous shortcomings and uncertainties, interesting observations can be made concerning the 1st person plural ‘exclusive’/‘inclusive’ contrast, the logophoric pronouns, the tonal polarity of Subject and Object pronouns, and different types of personal possessive constructions.

IDEOPHONES IN DZƏ (JENJO), AN ADAMAWA LANGUAGE OF NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA

Abstract: Ideophone is a phenomenon dominant in African languages. Dzə is an under-investigated and under-documented Adamawa language found in Taraba, Adamawa and Gombe States, Northeastern Nigeria. It was noticed that the language has a lot of ideophones. It became necessary to study it to understand its importance in the language. This study is to draw the attention of scholars working on Adamawa languages and ideophones. It will also thus form part of the grammar of Dzə someday. The study of ideophone is not exhaustive, especially in the minority languages of Northeastern Nigeria. The study shows that Dzə ideophones express intensity, emphasis and description. Dzə ideophones have unique phonological features and some of the sounds found in the conventional phonology of Dzə are not found in the ideophones. The phoneme /ŋ/ is common in the coda position of the ideophones. Ideophones modify verbs, adjectives and nouns in Dzə. They also function as adverbs and are elements that constitute a noun phrase. They augment other word classes like nouns, verbs and adjectives.

COVERBS AND AUXILIARIES IN PÈDÈ

Abstract: In Pèdè, predicates consisting of multiple verbal elements are extremely frequent. In this context, verbs adopting a secondary function of modifying coverbs play an important role. It can be shown that this function has emerged from conceptualisation processes within serial verb constructions. Along the same lines, a very limited number of auxiliaries have been grammaticalized. The types of coverbs and auxiliaries under discussion display partially overlapping functional ranges (in the semantic domain of aktionsart), they clearly differ, however, on the syntactic level.

ASPECTS OF THE PHONOLOGY AND MORPHOSYNTAX OF KYAK, AN ADAMAWA LANGUAGE OF NIGERIA

Abstract: This paper provides a preliminary analysis of a few aspects of the phonology and morphosyntax of Kyak [bka], a largely undocumented Adamawa language spoken in the northern part of Taraba State in Nigeria. The paper is divided into four main sections. The first section deals with the phonology, focusing on consonant and vowel inventories, some phonetic processes, and syllable structure. The second section looks at nominal morphology, particularly nominal modifiers and possessive constructions, which show a distinction between alienable and inalienable possession. The third section describes the verbal morphosyntax, identifying the various forms that encode the expression of tense-aspect and person-number. The fourth part looks at a couple of clause/sentence level features, namely the clitic -ŋ, which is associated with the marking of assertiveness, and the use of logophoric pronouns. This is the first description of the phonological and grammatical features of the language, and one of the first for the Jen cluster. It thus adds to the knowledge of the cluster and to the evaluation of genealogical and areal hypotheses which involve languages of this region.

Abstract: The paper focuses on minor noun classes and minor genders in Niger-Congo languages, which are usually regarded as anomalies in class systems. It takes into consideration data from 243 languages, and shows that such anomalies are most characteristic for quite specific meanings, namely those traditionally regarded as prototypical meanings of noun classes: ‘person’, ‘thing’, ‘foot’, ‘tree’, ‘eye’, ‘place’, etc. Thus, the particular patterns of class agreement observed, or particular correlations between singular and plural noun classes, often do not represent accidental exceptions, but are better thought of as a kind of marker of noun class paradigmatic semantics.

USING INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE IN TELECOM ADVERTISEMENTS: COMMUNICATIVE EFFECTS OF CIGOGO IN TTCL 4G LAUNCH CAMPAIGN IN TANZANIA

Abstract: In 2017, TTCL, one of the leading providers of telecommunication services in Tanzania, launched an unusual advertising campaign. Its content was culturally and linguistically localised targeting large ethnic groups of Tanzania (the Wasukuma, Wagogo, Wanyakyusa, Waluguru people). Billboards were placed in major cities where these ethnic groups are found. The billboards showed traditional and modern-day activities typical for the regions, accompanied by greetings in the respective indigenous languages. In this way, TTCL planned to create an awareness of their services, to acquire new customers, and to link the use of their services and patriotic feelings. This study analyses the ways 48 Wagogo persons decoded the information from the billboards found across the capital city, Dodoma, and interpreted the intended message. It measures the effectiveness of the advertisement and estimates the effects that the use of Cigogo had on native speakers. The methods used are a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with subsequent statistical analyses of the data (1-sample proportion test with continuity correction and Pearson’s chi-squared test).

LANGUAGE IDEOLOGY IN MONOLOGUES OF TWO BARAYIN SPEAKERS

Abstract: This paper compares the language ideologies expressed in two monologues from speakers of Barayin, a Chadic language spoken by about 6000 people in the Guera region of Chad. Both speakers express an essentialist conceptualization of their language in which an authentic use of the language is linked to ethnic identity. However, one speaker rejects the need for literacy in Barayin, while the other argues for literacy to help the younger generation maintain their vital link to the language.

Many sections have been expanded, such as the section on the independent state of the True «Self» (Atman) section, and the question of why this original state of Nirvana was lost in the beginningless past has also been addressed in more detail.

Both versions of this book are unusually vivid, rich, and detailed, with modern accounts of the one universal Law (Dharma) that is the essence of the teachings of Buddhism, Yoga, and Taoism.

The author of this book, a researcher of Dharma and a high-level practitioner (yogi), writes about the theory and practice of Buddhism, Yoga, and Taoism as a single teaching that may point a person toward his true original nature (the True «Self») and allow one to realize this state through proper practice. Also, the first volume includes a detailed description and explanation of the multilayered consciousness and the three worlds of the Universe: the World of Passions (World of Phenomena), the World of Forms (Astral World), and the World of Formless (Causal World). The first volume culminates in a final chapter in which the author provides a summary of the contents of the first four chapters, as well as a detailed description of death and rebirth and the tendencies of reincarnation in the intermediate state of the Bardo.

The second edition contains a detailed description of the lower realms of the Astral and Causal Worlds, the 17 Heavens of the Higher World of Forms, and how karma manifests itself.

All of the following descriptions are accompanied by illustrations (tables, diagrams, and drawings). Some of the first edition's illustrations have been corrected, some have been completely redone, and many new illustrations have been added in order to help the reader understand the teachings presented in the book more accurately.

Аннотация: Die Autorin Mila Meer ist Opfer von Organisierter ritueller Gewalt, und war seit ihrer Geburt jeden Tag sowohl schwerem innerfamiliären Missbrauch als auch körperlicher, seelischer und sexualisierter Gewalt durch einen international vernetzten Kult ausgesetzt. Unter Anwendung von Folter und traumabasierter Mind-Control wurde ihre Psyche gezielt aufgespalten und Persönlichkeitsanteile erschaffen, die unter anderem für die Sexsklaverei ausgebildet wurden. Dort gründete sie an der Staatlichen Universität St. Petersburg die Geopolitische Beobachtungsstelle für Russlands Schlüsselthemen (»G.O.R.K.I.«) und setzte ihre Tätigkeit als Vortragende und unabhängige Publizistin fort, während im Westen die Angriffe auf sie kein Ende nehmen.

So würde sich der Reichtum in Form von Kapital akkumulieren, während seine Produzenten dauerhaft von ihm ausgeschlossen wären: Beteiligt am Reichtum sind laut Marx die Arbeiter nur insoweit, wie die Benutzung ihrer Arbeitskraft ihre Entlohnung notwendig macht.

Karl Marx (1818 -1883) war ein deutscher Philosoph, Ökonom, Gesellschaftstheoretiker, politischer Journalist, Protagonist der Arbeiterbewegung sowie Kritiker der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft und der Religion. Der Amokläufer: eine Novelle des österreichischen Schriftstellers Stefan Zweig. Erstmals 1922 in der Zeitung Neue Freie Presse veröffentlicht und etwas später in der Novellensammlung Amok: Novellen einer Leidenschaft als Buch herausgegeben. Wie viele Werke Zweigs, der seinerzeit vom Sigmund Freud fasziniert war, hat Der Amokläufer einen starken psychologischen Hintergrund: Die Geschichte handelt von einer extremen Besessenheit, die den Helden dazu bringt, sein Berufs- und Privatleben dieser Leidenschaft zu opfern, und die ihn schließlich in den Freitod treibt.

Namensgebend für die Novelle ist der – damals noch wenig bekannte – Begriff Amok, der ursprünglich aus dem indonesischen Kulturkreis stammt und einen Rauschzustand beschreibt, in dem die betroffene Person in vermeintlich blinder Wut den Feind angreift und wahllos, ohne jede Rücksicht auf Gefahren, versucht, ihn sowie alle im Weg stehenden Personen zu töten.
