John N. Raphael's 'The Caillaux Drama' covers the sensational trial of Henriette Caillaux, a Parisian socialite and second wife of the former Prime Minister of France, for the murder of newspaper editor Gaston Calmette. The editor had received a letter that he published, severely tarnishing her husband's reputation, causing Caillaux to believe that he would publish more private letters revealing their intimate relationship. She took matters into her own hands and shot him six times, making no attempt to escape. The trial, which began on 20 July 1914, received extensive publicity and included a sexual scandal. The defense convinced the jury that her crime of passion was a result of her uncontrollable female emotions, leading to her acquittal on 28 July 1914. Raphael's book is a true crime tale that is sure to astonish the readers of today.
