'What Necessity Knows' is a novel written by L. Dougall. The story begins with a conversation between Robert Trenholme, a clergyman, and a member of his congregation who has come to seek advice and sympathy for a difficult situation. Trenholme provides both, emphasizing the importance of seeking help from divine sources in addition to help from fellow human beings. The conversation does not seem to have a strong impact on the visitor, who leaves still feeling troubled. Trenholme shows the visitors out with a friendly manner, but is left feeling a sense of disappointment, as if he has failed in his attempt to provide comfort.
