"The Camp-life of the Third Regiment" by Robert Thomas Kerlin was written to honor the Third Missouri Volunteers, who offered their lives for their country in the cause of humanity. Life in a soldier's camp is unlike anything a civilian will ever experience, which makes it easy to judge these men who try to serve their country. Kerlin aimed to bridge the gap between regiments and the common people by bringing readers into the camp life of the Third Regiment of Missouri. From dawn until dusk and all through the night, Kerlin shares the experiences of what it's like to be a soldier, a surgeon, and even a bugle boy during times of conflict.
