«On the Calculation of Volume I» kitabından alıntılar, sayfa 4

We were Siamese twins, a team of horses, two lumberjacks sawing through a tree trunk

There is something reassuring about the sky.

It happened because I had gone out into the garden. Because it was the middle of the night, because I needed to pee, because I opened the door into the hall and crept out of the back door. It was cold, I walked barefoot across the lawn, past the apple tree and over to the hedge. The sky was clouded over, I peed in the darkness and then got up, meaning to go straight back to the house, but at that moment the clouds broke just at the spot where the moon had been hanging hidden

I could see him looking around the kitchen, he shifted uneasily on his chair and shot a glance at the door into the hall. He was looking for a way out.

That was all. Two times that had flooded their banks

Had we been in Mesopotamia the rivers would have acquired names and flowed back into their normal courses

And then I remembered that I had picked up the pot on my way to the shed to put back the cushion from the garden chair after my nocturnal visit. I seemed to recall putting the pot on a shelf in the shed, but I had been halfasleep and wasn’t entirely certain so I got up to check and sure enough, there it was, sitting, or lying almost, on the top of a box containing twine and gardening gloves and packets of seeds.
