This book is an account of the establishment of the British Protectorate over New Guinea by Commodore J. E. Erskine. The book's author, Charles Lyne, was the only journalist allowed to accompany the expedition and had a commission from Sydney Morning Herald to document the events and findings. The ship cruised along almost the whole of the southern coast, reaching East Cape and visiting various populated areas to learn the traditions and customs of the locals.
