The freedmen were part of The Port Royal Experiment in which former African slaves were allowed to work the plantations abandoned by the white men who had all fled when the Unionists captured Port Royal and that part of the coast. A freedmen bureau was set up to offer help and advice, and generally, the Africans proved themselves well able to live and work independently, profitably and amicably.
