'The Gates of Dawn' is a novel written by Fergus Hume. The story begins with a colorful caravan traveling along a dusty road in rural England. It moves across the heath in the twilight, surrounded by a quiet and vast expanse of land. For over an hour, it continues on, as if searching for a destination. The fox-terrier grows tired and begins to whine, but the driver remains unperturbed. After some time, the caravan reaches a ridge topped by stunted pines and the horse stops at the driver's signal.
