Between 1874 and 1958, European countries systematically displayed people from colonized territories in so-called «human zoos» and ethnological exhibitions. Over 25,000 people were exhibited before more than 1.5 billion visitors – many died under abysmal conditions. This essay illuminates a largely forgotten chapter of European history and its reckoning today.
