Elias Hicks was a traveling Quaker minister from Long Island, New York. In his ministry, he promoted unorthodox doctrines that led to controversy and criticism. He believed that the Inner Light, present in every person, should be the sole rule of faith. Hicks also believed Jesus had become the Christ or Son of God through perfect obedience to the Inner Light. Therefore, he most referred to Christ as our «great pattern», encouraging others to grow in love and righteousness.
