I read The Last of the Mohicans again as a young man.By this time I knew that J. F. Cooper was the first great American novelist, and, if somewhat unwillingly, I recognized and appreciated at least some of his merits.I say ''unwillingly'' because I read it in the heady iconoclastic days of Sinclair Lewis and The American Mercury,when the old formalism of English prose had long since been tossed out the window, and to confess a liking for it was to betray some pitiable weakness.
