The Roman Emperor Caligula is largely remembered by history as a bloodthirsty madman. Yet, beneath the volcanic waters of Lake Nemi, he commissioned one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in the ancient world: two gargantuan, floating palace ships. These vessels were not built for war, but as floating temples of sheer, unrestrained luxury.

Measuring over 70 meters long, the Nemi Ships featured marble floors, heated plumbing systems, fruit trees, and complex ball-bearings that predated Leonardo da Vinci by a millennium. For centuries, they lay forgotten at the bottom of the lake, until the Italian fascist regime drained the entire body of water in the 1930s to recover them, unveiling Rome's lost technological brilliance to the world.
