It is the time of insane forecasts of the deluge, the time of huge political and religious upheavals. The Peasant Wars are the beginning of the end of feudal rule. With the Reformation, Christianity experienced what is probably the most severe upheaval since its founding. Book printing and the founding of universities stand for the end of the «Dark Middle Ages», for a time when education and intellect will regain their rights – although at the same time the darkest superstition is spreading, although an inquisition begins its mass murders.
