Two brothers, two fates, a turbulent time. In the 20th century, Alfred and Ernst Hofer are drawn from the tranquil Emmental to faraway places. But in the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, Alfred is forced to flee in a hurry and soon settles in France. But even there he had to fear for his life because of the horrors of the Second World War and the dangerous actions of the Resistance. The merchant Ernst ended up in Italy and Paris, but the First World War forced him to serve as an infantry corporal at the front. The Great Depression also brought setbacks, but Ernst did not give up.
