Foreword

Everything you need to know about an aquarium

All too often new aquarium owners have bad first experiences with their first aquarium and almost give up before they start. Considering these basic factors and planning will help potential new aquarium owners avoid common pitfalls. Planning is also a good idea for the experienced aquarium owner.

Two of the most important and fundamental aspects to consider when setting up a new aquarium are cost and size. In both cases, people usually underestimate what is needed and can make compromises that cause problems later.

In this guide book you will learn everything you need to know about getting started in the world of fish and aquariums. The great advantage of such a guide book is that you can read everything you need to know in one go and don't have to struggle through different portals and forums.

By reading through the guide book you save a lot of time and can quickly and with a lot of expertise start your project to set up an aquarium. If you do not have the possibility to visit a specialist shop directly and find the important information there.

Costs and time involved

You must be aware that running an aquarium is not cheap and involves a lot of investment. If you try to save money, you increase the risk that your fish will get sick and die faster. Good food and a nice atmosphere in the aquarium is an important aspect for the well-being of the fish.

The following table of costs only considers the basic costs of a small to medium-sized freshwater aquarium. Saltwater aquariums are only for experts and the costs for freshwater aquariums are a fraction of a saltwater aquarium. The cost of your time is not considered here.

Setting up and maintaining an aquarium is a hobby and a pleasure. If you consider aquarium maintenance to be an unpleasant task, you will not spend enough time maintaining it and therefore have an unhealthy aquarium and should consider another hobby.

Aquariums of less than 45 litres are not suitable for most freshwater setups and should be reserved for hospital or quarantine aquariums. If you enjoy your aquarium, you will soon "need" a larger aquarium and the costs will increase accordingly.

Many people who want to set up an aquarium think that there are no special costs involved and that the prices for an aquarium are rather low. Don't let them convince you that you can enter the world of aquariums for a maximum of fifty euros. If you follow most forums and statements of beginners, you should start with 150 to 200 Euros for a decent equipment. However, if you don't directly have that amount available, then you should start saving and preferably keep a checklist of what parts you need to set up your aquarium.

You should keep in mind that the prices for an aquarium can also skyrocket quickly if your fish and plants get sick all the time and you have to take care that you get well again.

Even a small, simple aquarium is a big investment and the fish are only a fraction of the cost you will have to spend on the whole aquarium. You should also keep in mind that you need to buy high quality food and equipment to ensure that the fish last a long time.

Aquariums are often considered a hobby or novelty for children. However, as you can read, the costs and expertise are far beyond the abilities or interests of an adolescent, and the aquarium must be primarily financed and maintained by an adult who really wants to find love for the aquarium.

Children love and can benefit from a well-maintained aquarium and often enjoy taking part in the care of the fish. However, the children should not just help on the side and not be the only person who takes care of the fish.
